Talk about sugar shock! We kept hearing about sugar in soda. So, out of curiosity, we did the math.
40g x 2 cans/day = 80g x 31 days = 2,480 grams, or 2.48 kilos, or 5.46 pounds of sugar a month
How about a year? A year of all-nighters, game days, road trips and other more-than-two-sodas-a-day occasions? Yikes!
How to cut down, then? You could switch to diet soda, which replaces sugar with a chemical sweetener such as aspartame.
Or, you could make your own soda with SweetLeaf® Liquid Stevia Sweet Drops™, which use stevia, a natural sweetener (unlike aspartame) with no calories or carbs and all the award-winning great taste with no bitter aftertaste. We make 17 flavors of Sweet Drops, including Cola. Our Soda flavor pack includes samplers of Cola, Grape and Root Beer in one box.
Here’s a good starter recipe that you can adjust to your taste, with your choice of flavored Sweet Drops:
- 8 oz. sparkling water
- 5-8 drops SweetLeaf® Liquid Stevia Sweet Drops™
Mix and enjoy a tasty 8-ounce soda with NO sugar! (Keep in mind that Sweet Drops are clear liquids, so if you use Cola Sweet Drops, it will taste like a cola, but look like sparkling water!)
Another bonus for making your own sugar-free soda: You’re keeping 60 cans/bottles a month out of landfills!
If you’ve made Sweet Drops soda, or created a unique flavor using a blend (such as Lemon Drop with Cola), let us know in the comments!
P.S.: Balancing your soda habit with healthy food? Go for it – but check the label. Plenty of foods that we don’t think of as sweet contain sugar: Ketchup, salad dressing, BBQ or spaghetti sauce. Even explicitly (expensively!) “healthy” foods – such as diet or 100-calorie items, low-fat yogurt, and energy bars – often pack serious sugar.
