Secret to good health? A positive attitude, says study
If you have been letting feelings of self-doubt and anxiety creep into your exercise routine or diet-plan, then your health could be suffering as a consequence. According to researchers from the University of Melbourne, those that have a positive attitude and believe that their own decisions influence their wellbeing, tend to be healthier than their cup-is-half-empty counterparts. "Our research shows a direct link between the type of personality a person has and a healthy lifestyle," says Professor Deborah Cobb-Clark, the director of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research. She and her colleagues analysed personality, diet and exercise data from more than 7,000 people. Their findings showed that those with a 'can-do' attitude are less likely to be physically inactive, follow a poor diet or smoke and binge drink alcohol. Professor Cobb-Clark believes that mindset plays an important role in maintaining a healthy weight. "Understanding the psychological underpinning of a person's eating patterns and exercise habits is central to understanding obesity," she said. How do you feel about your health? Do you believe you have control over your wellbeing, or do you think your health comes down to luck, fate or genetics? If this study proves to be correct, simply believing that you can make positive changes to your wellbeing will help you on your way to a healthier lifestyle. Here are a few ways that you may be able to get in control over your own health - time to leave the passenger's seat and get behind the wheel! Consult a professional First things first, a consultation with a medical professional can really help you gain a better understanding of your health. They may be able to identify any possible challenges or pre-existing conditions, and provide dietary advice. Make an exercise plan Our bodies were made to move! Whether you prefer a brisk walk before work or to run marathons, try to find an exercise you enjoy and make it a priority. Eat your way to better health What you feed your body is very important. Diet is where we get most essential vitamins and minerals. Yet many people find that following a poor diet can wreak havoc on their energy levels, and leave them feeling lethargic, tired and even depressed. When it comes to eating well, a rule of thumb is to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Try to avoid foods high in fat (excluding 'good fats' found in products like avocados, nuts and oily fish), and also steer clear of refined sugar. If you have a sweet tooth, try to use a sugar replacement such as Stevia or Xylitol. At Xlear Australia, we stock a range of products that are high in taste and flavour, yet low in calories - the perfect alternative for those who love sweet treats.
