Nasal Wash

Nasal Wash

Xlear (pronounced "clear") is a patented, non-addictive nasal wash designed to aid in the relief of irritation caused by pollutants, allergens and infections of the nasal passages.

It is the ONLY nasal wash that has combined the unique properties of the natural substance, xylitol, and the health-promoting practice of a saline nasal spray to help wash, hydrate moisturise the nasal passages.

What is Xlear Nasal Wash?
Xlear Nasal Wash is an all-natural product that helps the body's natural cleaning process wash away bacteria, pollens, dander, molds, allergens and other irritants that cause nasal congestion. Xlear contains xylitol, a naturally occurring substance and one of bacteria's natural enemies.

Nasal xylitol addresses the source of sinus and ear infections, allergies and asthma. When certain harmful bacteria enter the body, they attach to the membranes of the nose and throat. Xylitol has an interesting property that makes the mucous membranes in the body like “teflon”. Nothing can stick to them. Germs can’t hold on to areas within the nose, throat, and sinuses to propagate. Bacteria ‘slide off’ the membranes and are rinsed harmlessly out of the body, sometimes without even activating a major immune response. The more quickly it is used when symptoms first occur, the more effective it is against both bacterial and viral attackers.

The nose is a nidus — a nest where problems begin. Cleaning this nest regularly removes infection causing bacteria as well as the irritants that trigger allergies and asthma. Anytime a person has a problem that begins in the nose cleaning it regularly should be a part of their treatment. It is often the only part needed.

Xlear Nasal Wash merely flushes harmful bacteria and pollutants away. It is effectively a soap for your nose!

Why wash your nose?

  • Because the immune system's first line of defense is trying to wash out the irritant. In the nose we sense this as congestion, increased mucus, or post nasal drip. Helping your immune system with this washing is a much better response than blocking it with antihistamines and decongestants, or turning it off with local steroids.
  • Because the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) says that hand-washing is the most effective way of reducing communicable disease. The bacteria don't infect our hands but when we put our hands to our face they get into our nose. It makes as much sense to wash our nose.
  • Because ear infections in children, and sinus and bronchial infections in adults, start from infection in the nose. Two bacteria, Streptococcus Pneumoniae and Haemophilus -Influenzae, cause most of these infections and kill more than 40,000 people annually in the U.S., including many children. Their primary home is in the nose.
  • Because a clean nose reduces the need for antibiotics. The current overuse of antibiotics for upper respiratory infections is the major cause of antibiotic resistance.
  • Because nasal irritants cause most allergies and are a major trigger of asthma.
  • Because the common cold, a major cause of time loss from work and school, starts in the nose. Even the flu virus enters the body through the nose.

Who should wash their nose?

  • Ear infections are the most common infection in children. Doctor’s experiences have shown that regularly cleaning the nose with a spray containing xylitol reduced ear infections by 93%. Children and the people who deal with them, day care workers and primary grade teachers, should see the most benefit. People with chronic problems should benefit.
  • While children get ear infections adults get sinus infections. The bacteria that cause both infections first live, without causing problems, in the back of the nose. Feeding xylitol to these bacteria regularly reduces their numbers and can perhaps even tame them so that they don't cause serious infections.
  • Xlear contains a saline solution with xylitol, a natural substance found in many foods and made by cells in the human body. Xylitol is used commercially to sweeten many gums. Many countries encourage the use of xylitol in gum because it reduces tooth decay.
  • Finnish physicians have done excellent studies showing that chewing 8 sticks of this gum every day reduces ear infections in children by 40%. They also showed that a 5% solution of xylitol on cells from the nose releases the attachment of more than half of the bacteria, noted above, that are the major cause of respiratory infections.
  • If the CDC is correct, whoever washes their hands should wash their nose. Attachment is what infection is all about. If bacteria aren't attached there is no infection. When you wash your hands you wash away bacteria. It's the same with the nose.

How often should the nose be washed?

  • It depends on how bad the problem is. Most of the time adults can get by with two sprays in each nostril twice a day. If a person has symptoms of congestion, you can use it every fifteen minutes until the congestion clears.
  • Children in day care who are more prone to ear infections, or those who have had recurrent ear infections, should have their noses sprayed before every diaper change. Day care providers and teachers working with small children are exposed to more of these bacteria and should use Xlear more often.

Is it safe for children and infants?
Xlear Nasal Wash is all-natural, drug free and non-habit forming. Xlear contains purified water, saline and grapefruit seed extract-all found in over-the-counter nasal moisteners that have been used for years. Xylitol is the key ingredient that makes Xlear Nasal Wash so revolutionary and effective.

The World Health Organisation and the US FDA have given xylitol their safest ratings for food additives. Babies and small children can use Xlear Nasal Wash without restriction. If you have any concerns or questions before taking this, or any other over-the-counter product, consult first with your physician.

Two sprays in each nostril 2 times a day gives about 40 mg of xylitol. That is about 210 times less than the Finns used in their study, 250 times less than the average person makes in their own body every day. It is over 1000 times less than the safe IV dose, and less than a tenth of the xylitol in an average sized plum. But, as stated above, it is more than double the concentration found to release the harmful, infection causing, bacteria.

Will it interfere with any other medication that I am taking?
Xlear Nasal Wash contains only natural ingredients and no negative interactions are known. However, always consult with your physician if you have any questions before using this or any other over-the-counter product.

How is it used?
Tilt your head forward and seal off the nasal passage by closing off one nostril. Close your mouth and give the bottle a quick, firm squeeze, inhaling deeply to pull the mist into the sinus cavities. Do this once or twice for each nostril. Xlear Nasal Wash should be administered to infants and children in the same way. If the infant or child is resistant to this method of application, have him or her lie down and place two drops of Xlear Nasal Wash in each nostril.

How can I stop the Nasal Wash from running out of my nose?
Spray the Xlear Nasal Wash in to your nose taking a sharp breath as you spray. This moves the spray to the back of the nose where it is most effective.

How often should I use Xlear Nasal Wash?
For the first 2 to 4 weeks of Xlear Nasal Wash usage, adults and children should administer it frequently if they have chronic problems, say at least 3 to 4 times a day, until relief is noticed. After the 1st month, it should be used twice a day as a preventative measure.

For infants and small children who are in day care, exposed to infectious bacteria or suffer from chronic middle ear infection, Xlear Nasal Wash should be used 3 to 4 times a day.

How long will it last?
1 bottle of Xlear Nasal Wash should last a minimum of 1 month with heavy usage (3-4 applications per day) and 2-3 months with typical usage (1-2 applications per day). Many people find they only require heavy usage for the first 2-4 weeks.

What can I expect after I begin using Xlear Nasal Wash?
Antihistamines and decongestants are widely used for temporary relief of nasal stuffiness and other symptoms of sinus problems and infections-turning off the body's natural washing process. This provides temporary relief but soon wears off and sets up a cycle of dependence. Xlear Nasal Wash thins the mucus and assists the body's natural process of clearing the nasal passages and washing away bacteria, allergens, pollen and other pollutants. When you begin using Xlear, you may experience an increase in mucus flow, indicating that the washing process is taking place.

Dr Lon Jones, the developer of Xlear Nasal Wash says "In my experience the biggest problem with this spray is that people use it, get better, then forget about it. Pretty soon they are back with the same problems. If you get better don't use it as much, but regular sustained use, at least twice a day, with more when you feel a problem, is the best way to avoid them. Cleaning the nose is just like washing hands - it needs to be done regularly."

"I love your nasal wash! I've had many sinus problems due to nasal drainage and allergies in past years. However, I recently tried your nasal wash, and for the first time in ages I was able to breathe well at night and wake up feeling great every morning. What a great product"
John L

What is the shelf life of Xlear Nasal Wash?
The minimum shelf life for Xlear Nasal Wash is at least 1 year.

"Xlear Nasal Wash helps clear my congestion and allows me to sleep better better at night. I recently had a cold and began using Xlear. For the first time in years, I didn't get a sinus problem from my cold"
Lisa H
